Understanding EV charging network prices

Public charging prices vary widely between networks, between DC fast and Level 2, and between members and guests. This comparison lists current per-kWh or per-minute rates, membership plans and idle fees for the major US networks — Tesla Supercharger, Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint, Blink, IONNA and others — so you can see which membership actually pays off for your driving.

As a rule of thumb, a paid membership pays for itself if you fast-charge more than a few times a month on one network. For everyone else, guest pricing plus a free app account is usually the cheapest option, and home charging remains far cheaper than any public network.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some networks charge per minute instead of per kWh?

State rules historically limited who could sell electricity by the kWh. Most states now allow it, but a few stations still bill per minute — which penalises cars that charge slowly.

What are idle fees?

A per-minute charge that starts once your car is finished charging and still occupies the stall. Move promptly to avoid them — they're also basic charging etiquette.

How often are the prices updated?

Rates are reviewed with each app release. Networks change pricing regionally, so always confirm the price shown on the charger or in the network's app before you plug in.
