How the EV vs Gas savings calculator works
The calculator compares what you'd spend on fuel driving a gas car against what you'd spend on electricity driving an EV over the same miles. Enter your annual mileage, your electricity rate, your local gas price and the efficiency of each vehicle, and it projects the difference over one, five and ten years.
Fuel is usually the largest saving, but not the only one: EVs have no oil changes, fewer brake replacements thanks to regenerative braking, and far fewer moving parts. The calculator focuses on fuel so the comparison stays transparent — treat maintenance as an additional saving on top.
Frequently asked questions
What electricity rate should I use?
Use the per-kWh rate from your utility bill. If you have a time-of-use plan and charge overnight, use the off-peak rate — that's where most EV owners save the most.
Does it include public fast-charging costs?
The default assumes home charging. If you rely on public DC fast charging, raise the electricity rate to roughly what those networks charge (typically $0.40–$0.60 per kWh in the US) for a realistic figure.
How accurate is the efficiency number?
The calculator uses each vehicle's official rating. Real-world efficiency varies with weather and driving style, so consider the result a solid estimate rather than a guarantee.
