About the VIN decoder and recall checker
Enter any 17-character Vehicle Identification Number to see what the vehicle is, what the government knows about it, and whether it has open recalls. The decoder queries the NHTSA vPIC database directly for make, model, year, plant, body style and drivetrain, then checks NHTSA's recall and safety-investigation records for that model.
For electric vehicles the tool also adds the EPA-rated range and an estimate of the remaining battery warranty based on the manufacturer's published terms — useful when you're evaluating a used EV. All of this comes from official US data sources, so it works best for vehicles sold in the United States.

Is it safe to enter my VIN?
A VIN is not a secret — it's printed on your windshield and registration. The lookup sends it only to the official NHTSA service to decode it; EV Charger Scout doesn't store it.
Why does the recall list show a recall that was already fixed on my car?
NHTSA lists recalls by model, not by individual vehicle. To confirm whether the repair was done on your specific car, check with a dealer or the manufacturer's own VIN lookup.
What is an open safety investigation?
An investigation is NHTSA looking into reported problems before deciding whether a recall is warranted. It's an early warning, not a confirmed defect.
Does it work for non-US vehicles?
Decoding works for most VINs worldwide, but recall, investigation and EPA range data only cover vehicles sold in the US.
